After our two housemates left – Patty and I had the house to ourselves for another week – before we moved into smaller accommodation.

We had trips to the mainland and also took walks around the island – as well as spending time reading and relaxing.  I was hoping in those weeks to catch up with Kert to discuss the website and I sent emails asking about this.  However the only reply I got was that he would be in contact soon.

One morning I opened my computer to find an email from my sister Sue.  At that time she and her husband ran a business – as well as bringing up twin boys, who were then  13.  Her email started by apologising for being the bearer of bad news while I was on holiday – but she had to let me know she was currently in hospital, as it had been discovered she has Myeloma – a type of blood cancer……

I couldn’t believe what I was reading!!!!  She was always so incredibly healthy!!!  I had never heard of this, so of course I wanted to know more.  And I felt like I had been run over by a bus – it was such a shock – and here I was on the other side of the world!

I read her email over and over.  She hadn’t told our elderly Mum and wasn’t quite sure how to break the news to her – and she would be in hospital for a week or two while they ran more tests.

I first rang Doug to tell him the news – my first thought was to get on a plane home – but Sue said there was nothing I could do at present – she had friends looking after the boys while they were at the hospital.  Doug said also to stay there and we would work something out.

Over the next few days we moved to our new accommodation – and I was busy with calls to my sister Ros in UK as well as Doug and Sue.  It was decided that Doug and Emma would tell Mum.  As it turned out – Mum took it  well and it was arranged that Doug would take Mum  to see Sue – but first he had a work trip.  That meant he would be driving over 12 hours one way…

I was so grateful to him for working it out and literally busting himself so Mum could see Sue… And I was so grateful to Emma for making sure her Nanna was okay – and then minding all the animals.

Meanwhile I was reading all I could about Myeloma and staying in touch.  It was frightening for everyone and I was an emotional wreck.  However I continued on walks, doing my meditation and exercises – and trying to focus on the next two courses which were meant to take us to riding!

I emailed Kert to tell him of my news and asked if he had any ideas that could help.  He had said he cured himself of a life threatening illness, so I wanted some advice.  They replied that he would talk to me about it – and also would make time to discuss the website arrangement.

Now there’s a reason why I’ve gone into detail about my news – because it was the catalyst for the coming events….
